17th Century Scottish Basket Hilted Broadsword
For Sale |
A very good 1620-1640 Scottish basket hilted broadsword, probably
for a horseman, possibly for a very large infantryman, with Passau
Wolf, talisman and Andrea Ferrara markings.

Almost certainly used by a Highland horseman, this impressive Scottish
broadsword with imposing 87cm blade is in very good order for its
age and I believe 100% authentic (pommels and grips are often replaced;
the pommel and grip on this broadsword are almost certainly authentic
original).

Although worn the blade is in very good order and clearly shows
the all important 17th Century style Passau Wolf mark, a lucky talisman
and the name "Andrea Ferrara". The Passau Wolf shows this
to be a Prussian made blade (as was common) with the Andrea Ferrara
marking a statement of quality (Andrea Ferrara actually died the
previous century and was a Spanish blade maker); the Scots and many
others using Ferrara's name to indicate a quality blade long after
his death plus the fact Ferrara had Catholic connotations popular
of course with Scotland of that time.

This is a truly lovely and well above normal condition early to
mid 17th Century Scottish broadsword, amazingly well balanced and
with a superb feel to it to this day. The blade, though worn, is
very good and sound, firm in the hilt. The hilt is in very good
order, well above average, a couple of hardly noticeable well repaired
cracks to the bars one side, no discernable bending, the grip also
tight. I would accept £3000 for what would be the centre piece
of most people's collections. Further / full sized pictures available
upon request. Item reference number 312.
