1800 British Naval Officer's Sabre (Sold)

Very early 1800's (pre-Traflagar), ivory hilted British naval officer's sabre with scabbard.

A very good 1800's pattern British navy officer's sword with the supplier's name "Booth & Palmer, Chatham", John Booth was a renowned sword cutler and silversmith who made swords for senior naval officers in Chatham during 1800. I deduce Booth & Palmer must have come during or shortly after 1800 but before 1805 when the new sword pattern was introduced; this sword therefore of course pre-dates Trafalgar by just a few years raising the prospect it could well have seen that famous battle.

The curved fullered blade is 28.5" long and etched (worn) with sea monsters, trophies and scrolls, while the hilt of ivory (small crack at top) and beautiful gilt fouled anchor set against the gilt and leather scabbard is truly impressive; the sword is likely to have been re-gilted at some stage in its active life. The sword is in generally good condition with no looseness; the scabbard's leather is generally good order and I believe it to be original but can not be 100% sure.
