1796 P British Light Cavalry Trooper's Sabre For Sale

A good condition 1796 P light cavalry trooper's sabre, believed made by Osborn as has crown inspection stamp 11, complete with scabbard.

A good if "cleaned" (rust removed) 1796 pattern cavalry trooper's sabre with a British crown 11 inspection stamp, indicating the sword was made by Osborn (Birmingham and London) for a front line army cavalry regiment. This inspection stamp, the two "B" ben test marks on the blade's spine, the genuine aged condition plus the correct feel of this sword allow me to 100% guarantee it is authentic. It is a shame the scabbard and hilt have been cleaned so much as any regiment markings are now lost; who knows what these would have told us about where this sword has once been.

The 32 1/2 inch blade is in very good order; it has some small precise nicks to the first cutting section of the blade and I would say these are without a doubt the result of a clash of swords. The blade is firm in the hilt. The hilt and the scabbard have rusted in the past and then been over-cleaned (the rust pitting is still evident). None the less, the sword is still robust. The grip is in very good order but the grip wire bindings have gone. The sword sheathes well; the scabbard has some rust penetration holes near the shoe / drag. A good example and well worth £750.
