1897 Pattern George 5th Wilkinson British
Infantry Officer's Sword (sold) |
A very good condition George 5th British infantry officer's sword,
scabbard, all weather cover and Wilkinson box, including original
owner provenance.

Wilkinson sword made this 1897P in 1932 (serial number 63192);
the Wilkinson sales ledger is available to provide the data on the
original buyer (cost is 18 GBP), though I do not think it is necessary.
In 1969 the then owner (Captain CF Jackson) had it refurbished by
Wilkinson, and included is the Wilkinson box they sent it back in.
It is pretty certain Capt Jackson had it done for his father, Colonel
Jackson (see Wilkinson label below). So you have a very good sword
and provenance to research the Jacksons who once owned this sword.

In 1969 Wilkinsons probably replaced the grip, replated the blade
(so the etching is good but not as crisp as it was when first made)
and hilt, replaced the scabbard (throat is marked to Wilkinson)
and added a new sword knot. The all weather bag I believe is original
to 1932 when the sword was first made; it was very dry when I got
it and I have lavished leather balsam onto it. Everything is very
good though there are a couple of small black patina flecks along
the spine of the blade. Further / full sized images upon request.
My reference number is 712 (248).
