1897P GRI British Infantry Officer's Sword
by Gaunt (sold) |
A good 1897 pattern British infantry officer's sword, GRI denoting
India service during George 5th's reign, made by J R Gaunt &
Sons.

J R Gaunt are believed by many to be the top maker quality wise
for officer swords of this period, and it shows. This George V India
infantry officer's sword is very nicely made indeed. "GRI"
(India service) swords are in the minority when it comes to WW1
era British swords as most officers were of course on the killing
fields of France, Belgium and Holland; fortunate indeed the British
officer stationed in India throughout the "Great" War.

Lovely 33 inch blade with superb etching, a little spotting and
patina here and there, not too much. The nickel plated hilt is mostly
good, some spots, a little rust along one edge, not too much. The
fishskin grip in good order with the twisted wire grip bindings
present if a little loose in places, but not so bad. The original
leather knot and field service scabbard both in good order; sword
sheathes well. Further / full sized images upon request. My item
reference number is 721 (289)
