1821 Pattern British 7th Hussars Officer's Cavalry Sabre / Sword (sold)

In good condition, the blade in very good condition, a Victorian British 7th Hussars officer's sword.

This sword has a magnificent blade both in quality of etching and of condition. OK, the grip and scabbard are well worn, but they are well worn through actual period use; this sword was very clearly carried and drawn / held a lot by its original owner, an officer in the elite Queen's Own (the) VII Hussars. The blade etched with the 7th Hussars badge and battle honours to Peninsula, Waterloo and Lucknow. The blade has been period professionally sharpened which in no way detracts from, but only adds to it.

Circa 1890, the officer would likely have seen service in Egypt, the Sudan (Nile Expedition), Rhodesia and Mashonaland (North Rhodesia). I suspect this sword was used to brutal and bloody effect during this active period for the 7th Hussars. The blade's ricasso marked to well known outfitter Stohwasser in Conduit Street, London.

The superb 35 inch blade is firm in the hilt. The hilt with patina and signs of period (slight) damage. The fishskin grip very well worn but in good order, as are the twisted grip wire bindings. The original steel scabbard with multiple usage dings and dents but overall sound to good. You could spend some money with a refurbisher like Crisp & Sons to replace the fishskin etc. and bring the entire sword back to the near new condition of the blade, but I love it just the way it is and personally I would consider replacing the grip a crime against the history of this sword.
