English 1742 Pattern Infantry Hanger (Sold) |
Good condition 18th Century English 1742 Pattern Infantry Hanger.

Further pictures available upon request. Marked to the Rutland
Militia, this rare sword comes complete with the remnants of
its old sword knot. Markings to the hilt like this were not standard
and as the Rutland Militia was formed in 1759 and a new pattern
came out in 1751, this sword is almost certainly a "hand me
down" from a regular British infantry unit and likely it saw
service therefore in the 7
Year War which left Britain as the dominant imperial power in
North America, and the only European power east of the Mississippi.
Blade marked with / to famous sword maker SH (Samuel Harvey) with
his running fox trademark. The blade is 70 cm long and very firm
in the hilt; the blade has a feint jagged line across it which may
be natural patination, a stress mark or even a very well repaired
break. My item reference number is 154 (21)
