1821 Pattern Victorian General Officer's Mameluke Sabre (sold)

A fine and in very good condition Victorian British general officer's mameluke, 1850-1860.

In very good condition for its age, this British General Staff Officer's mameluke sabre was made between 1850 and 1860 by William Wolmershusen of 48 Curzon Street, Mayfair in London

Fine and very exclusive for the period grey etching on the virtually rust free 31.5 inch curved blade with maker's mark, VR Royal Cypher, crossed sword and baton plus foliate oak background etchings. Blade firm in the hilt, the hilt solid, the ivory grips complete (some marbling and a small hairline crack as one expects from such age - actually, this example has aged exceptionally well). Being ivory hilted it is bound by the worldwide CITES agreement but is exempt from prohibition due to the fact the ivory is over 100 years old.

The sabre draws and sheathes exceptionally well in the superb condition scabbard (one slight dent near the chape one side) which I have cleaned the tarnish, etc. from but could and should be cleaned / polished (carefully, with "magic cotton" metal cleaner) further for maximum effect.
